Merchant City is situated to the east of George Square and is known as Glasgow’s cultural quarter. It is an affluent area originally due to the tobacco lords who traded internationally and brought wealth to Glasgow during the 18th century. Later Merchant City was the trading centre for cotton and other textiles. Today restoration and renovation has given a face-lift to the original buildings oozing with history and tales. Merchant City also has its sordid past from the precinct in front of Glasgow Cathedral where witches were burned publicly to tales around Ramshorn Churchyard including removing bodies from graves to further anatomy research at the university. Glasgow’s late night revellers who crave greasy food after a few alcoholic beverages have Merchant City to thank for introducing fast food to the city. Pies were the order of the day and for many years Granny Black’s in Candleriggs was the first stop before the bus or train home. Today Merchant City plays host to trendy cafés, bars, restaurants and clubs. Many designer and exclusive labels can be purchased around this area and particularly from the popular Italian Centre. |
